Get on your dancing shoes: Kinky Boots Show Review

Ladies, Gentlemen and those who are yet to make up their minds- Grab your sparkliest boots and head on down to Kinky Boots which will take you on a road of inspiring tales, songs and make you want to buy new shoes!

The show which has gone onto win countless awards including a 2016 Olivier award for best new musical, has set a high barrier of popularity with audiences from the US to the UK. And it’s easy to see why – telling a heartwarming tale from the dull streets of Northampton to the fashion catwalks of Milan.

Based on the 2006 British Fim ‘Kinky Boots’, inspired by the true story about a Charlie Price who inherits a shoe factory from his father. After a chance encounter with the drag queen Lola, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with Lola to produce a line of high heeled boots for men and save the business. Both discover the complex feelings towards their fathers that drive them on. This is explained in the beautiful song ‘Not My Fathers Son’. No spoilers, but we think their dads would be very proud of what they achieved. (Heads up bring tissues, its a tear jerker)

The story which focuses on the inspiring tale of following your dreams, and being inspired by an unlikely niche market of drag queens. Oliver Tompset plays newly-assigned factory owner Charlie, torn between moving to London with childhood sweetheart Nicola and staying behind to save his father’s shoe imperium from going bankrupt.

The scene-stealing moment surely is the incredible Lola, played by the wonderful Simon-Anthony Rhoden. Appearing with her dance troupe of drag queens – The Angels. The moment these girls come onstage the show is turned up to 100! Visually stunning and with vocals to match they will have you hooked.

The musical which features music written by 80’s icon Cyndi Lauper is full of high energy numbers and will leave you with wanting to be up onstage with the cast. The songs help bond unlikely friendships and how we view others, to realise we aren’t that different after all. Try and stay sat down and not get up and dance during the finale number. It is an impossible task, we promise you.

You change the world when you change your mind! If this isn’t the perfect mantra for life then I don’t know what is.

You’ll be leaving saying yeah, yeah and with a new found confidence singing the most beautiful thing in the world…shoes! The show is going on tour next year so be sure to go and see it when it comes to your local area. Grab your tickets over on the Kinky Boots website:  http://www.kinkybootsthemusical.co.uk/ and get the Soundtrack on  Itunes or listen to it on Spotify!
